Kolkata Airport Expansion Plan Cleared to Handle 40 Million Passengers by 2030

New Terminals, Faster Metro Links, and International Routes in Focus

Kolkata, May 2 – The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is set for a major expansion after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) approved a new blueprint to double its passenger handling capacity by 2030.

Currently handling around 22 million passengers annually, the Kolkata airport will undergo significant infrastructure upgrades aimed at reaching a capacity of 40 million over the next five years.

New Terminals and Faster Baggage Systems Proposed

As per the proposal, a second integrated terminal building will be constructed beside the existing Terminal T2, with additional aerobridges, high-speed baggage handling systems, and a larger customs zone for international traffic.

The first phase of construction is expected to begin by early 2026, after environment and land acquisition clearances.

“This will make Kolkata one of the top 5 busiest airports in India,” said an AAI official. “It’s a long-overdue upgrade to match the city’s aviation demand.”

Metro Connectivity to Airport Gets a Boost

In coordination with the Kolkata Metro Railway, AAI has confirmed that Metro Line 4 (from Noapara to Barasat via Airport) will directly link with the upgraded terminal by 2027.

Officials say this could reduce travel time from Salt Lake and Sector V to the airport to under 35 minutes.

Travelers and daily flyers welcomed the decision. “Right now, peak-hour traffic from EM Bypass to the airport is unpredictable. A metro link will make it seamless,” said frequent flyer Subham Ghosh.

New International Routes Likely in 2026

In a bid to turn Kolkata into an eastern gateway for Southeast Asia, the AAI is reportedly in talks with carriers from Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, and Kuala Lumpur to increase direct connectivity starting next year.

Kolkata airport may also get approval for more cargo terminals, enabling Bengal to scale up trade links via air.

Passenger Growth Behind the Push

Year Passengers Handled
2015–16 12.5 million
2019–20 22 million
2024–25* 27 million (projected)
2030 Target 40+ million
