From Theme Wars to Sky-High Budgets, The City Gears Up for a Mega Festive Season
The heartbeats of drums, the sparkle of fairy lights, and the scent of dhuno are already in the air — albeit five months early. That’s because Durga Puja 2025 is expected to be one of the grandest celebrations Kolkata has seen post-pandemic, and preparations are already underway in full swing.
Clubs across the city, from North Kolkata’s Sovabazar Rajbari to South Kolkata’s Badamtala Ashar Sangha, are sparing no effort in crafting unique themes and show-stopping installations. After two years of controlled festivities and cautious budgets, this year’s pujo promises a creative explosion and economic revival.
H2: Record-Breaking Budgets and Celebrity Associations
This year, pandal budgets are expected to cross ₹1.5 crore for top-tier pujas like Santosh Mitra Square and Suruchi Sangha, fueled by sponsorships, donations, and digital ad revenues. Organizers confirm that brands from FMCG to fintech are eager to return as sponsors, hoping to tap into the unmatched footfall of Bengal’s biggest festival.
The buzz also includes celebrity appearances, with reports suggesting that Tollywood stars and even OTT personalities may inaugurate leading pandals. “It’s not just a festival anymore—it’s a media event,” says Arindam Ghosh, media manager for a major puja committee.
Meanwhile, eco-friendly themes and inclusive designs—such as pandals created by trans artists or showcasing climate awareness—are gaining ground and social traction.
North vs. South: The Eternal Theme Battle
The legendary rivalry between North and South Kolkata pandals continues to shape the cultural contours of Durga Puja. While North Kolkata holds on to traditional aesthetics and historical charm, South’s clubs like Tridhara Sammilani and Naktala Udayan Sangha are pushing the envelope with high-tech artistry and immersive experiences.
New Town and Salt Lake, too, are emerging as fresh hotspots with space-age themes and tech-driven crowd management, including drone surveillance and QR-based entry passes to manage pandemic-conscious footfall.
Economic Impact: A ₹40,000 Crore Festival
Durga Puja is not just a religious or cultural celebration—it is an economic engine. According to a 2023 study by the Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management, the festival generates over ₹40,000 crore in economic activity across sectors like textiles, transport, food, lighting, and advertising.
“This year, we expect the numbers to grow by at least 15%, with increased tourism and local spending,” said Dr. Sunetra Basu, a socio-economist based in Kolkata.
