Trial Runs Begin as Daily Commuters Anticipate Faster East-West Connectivity
The much-delayed Sealdah to Esplanade stretch of the East-West Metro (Green Line) is finally set to open by July 2025, according to officials from Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC). Trial runs have already begun on the underground segment, which will complete the vital link between Howrah Maidan and Sector V.
Once operational, the stretch is expected to cut cross-city travel time by half, benefiting daily commuters, office-goers, and tourists alike.
Underground Engineering Milestone Near Completion
The Sealdah–Esplanade segment spans over 2.3 kilometers, and is part of India’s most ambitious underwater metro project. The section includes the iconic Hooghly River tunnel, which has been successfully tested for pressure and safety.
“We are in the final stages of signaling calibration. If everything remains on track, we expect full safety clearance by mid-June,” said a senior KMRC engineer.
Once integrated, the East-West Metro will span 16.6 kilometers, making it one of the fastest transit options between north-central and eastern Kolkata.
New Route to Ease Pressure on Blue Line and Buses
At present, buses and autos between Sealdah, Esplanade, and Salt Lake are overcrowded during rush hours. The Green Line is expected to relieve traffic on the Blue Line (Dum Dum–New Garia) and reduce congestion at Maidan, Park Street, and Central.
Commuters have expressed optimism. “Traveling from Phoolbagan to Park Circus takes 45 minutes by bus. This new line might bring it down to 20,” said resident Trisha Bhowmik.
