Kolkata, Bankura and Purulia Among Worst-Hit Districts as Heatwave Intensifies
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across large parts of South Bengal, warning of a severe heatwave spell lasting through the weekend. Several districts, including Bankura, Purulia, West Midnapore, and parts of Kolkata, have already recorded daytime temperatures above 42°C, triggering concerns over health and power demand.
According to IMD’s regional office in Alipore, this could be the longest unbroken heatwave in the state since 2016, if temperatures remain above 40°C for the next 4–5 days.
School Schedules and Outdoor Work Affected
The West Bengal Education Department has advised adjusted school hours in affected districts, recommending that classes start before 8 AM and end by noon. Several private schools in Asansol, Durgapur, and Howrah have already shifted to half-day schedules or resumed online classes.
Construction companies and factory units in industrial zones have also begun rescheduling outdoor shifts to early morning and late evening hours.
“It’s becoming unbearable by 11 AM. We’re advising all workers to stay hydrated and take breaks,” said a supervisor at a construction site in New Town.
