West Bengal Schools Announce Early Summer Vacations Amid Indo-Pak Tensions

With the ongoing escalation between India and Pakistan showing no signs of de-escalation, many private schools in West Bengal have decided to advance summer vacations, responding to both safety concerns and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s public appeal.

Mamata’s Advisory Sparks Statewide Action

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had, on May 8, urged all educational institutions to take proactive steps in the interest of children’s safety and health. Citing the dual threat of a national security situation and the rising heatwave, she encouraged schools to pause operations earlier than scheduled.

In response, institutions across Kolkata, Howrah, Durgapur, Siliguri, and Asansol have declared holidays beginning May 9.

Major Schools That Have Declared Early Closure

  • Delhi Public School Ruby Park

  • St. Xavier’s Institution, Panihati

  • South Point School

  • La Martiniere for Boys and Girls

  • BD Memorial International School

  • Future Foundation School

School authorities cite a mix of parental concern, heat advisories, and geopolitical uncertainty as reasons for the abrupt break.

Official Statement from the School Boards

A spokesperson from the Association of Private Schools in West Bengal stated:

“In light of the Chief Minister’s advice and the ongoing developments nationally, we believe an early summer break is the most responsible course of action. Safety is our top priority.”

Heatwave and Panic Buying Add to Urgency

Apart from the Indo-Pak conflict, the IMD has issued a red alert for extreme heat in multiple districts of South Bengal, with Kolkata recording highs of 41°C and humidity at over 80%.

Several schools reported increased absenteeism over the last few days, prompting the decision to end classes early. Parents have also begun stockpiling essential school supplies and food items, reflecting public anxiety about possible disruptions.

What Happens to Exams and Projects?

Many institutions have assured students and parents that internal assessments and pending projects will be shifted online. Summer homework and assignments will be emailed directly to parents, and reopening is tentatively scheduled for June 10, subject to further review.

Education Department’s Clarification

While the state government hasn’t issued a blanket order, it has empowered individual schools to decide based on their logistical capacity and local conditions. Government-run schools are expected to follow suit in phases, particularly in border districts like Malda, Murshidabad, and North 24 Parganas.
