Upcoming Film Festivals in West Bengal Celebrate Indie Voices and Global Cinema – 2025

West Bengal Gears Up for a Cinematic May and June With Two Major Film Events

Kolkata, May 6 — West Bengal is set to transform into a hub for independent and international cinema as two prominent film festivals open their doors to cinephiles, creators, and critics alike. The Bengal International Independent Film Festival (BIIFF) and the International Film Festival Bay of Bengal (IFFBOB) will be held in May and June respectively, offering a vibrant platform for new-age storytellers and globally acclaimed films.

BIIFF 2025: Spotlight on Independent Cinema

The Bengal International Independent Film Festival, scheduled for May 10, 2025, is being hosted at multiple cultural venues in Kolkata. Organized by a consortium of film societies and indie filmmakers, BIIFF focuses on non-commercial cinema and experimental storytelling.

This year’s theme is “Voices Beyond the Frame”, and the festival has received over 500 submissions from 38 countries. Official selections include shorts, feature films, documentaries, and animated works. Screenings will be followed by filmmaker Q&As and masterclasses on cinematography, editing, and narrative techniques.

Entry to the festival is open to the public with prior registration, and awards will be presented for Best Indie Feature, Best Short, Best Documentary, and Audience Choice.

International Film Festival Bay of Bengal (IFFBOB): Global Vision at Howrah

Following closely, the International Film Festival Bay of Bengal (IFFBOB) is scheduled from June 2 to June 5, 2025, at Sarat Sadan Auditorium, just a short walk from Howrah Railway Station. IFFBOB is curated by the Indian Filmmakers Association and is open for film submissions until May 25, 2025.

The festival aims to connect South Asian filmmakers with global markets, showcasing cinema that explores social justice, climate change, diaspora experiences, and regional cultures. A special “Focus Bengal” segment will feature local talent and films shot across the state’s districts.

The event will also host panel discussions with directors, OTT platform buyers, and critics on the evolving landscape of film distribution and festival circuits.

Cultural Impact and Government Support

Both festivals are expected to boost cultural tourism and promote Bengal as a cinema-friendly destination. The Department of Information & Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal, has extended support to facilitate venue access and international participation.

“These festivals help project West Bengal not just as a state of stories, but as a destination where cinema and creativity are nurtured,” said a spokesperson from the cultural ministry.

Film Enthusiasts and Industry Alike Welcome

Aspiring filmmakers, students, bloggers, and film critics are encouraged to attend and network. Both festivals provide fertile ground for pitching projects, collaborating with peers, and learning from established voices.
