Sindhi homemakers walk the ramp in Kolkata fashion show celebrating inclusivity

Sindhi homemakers defy stereotypes on stage
A unique fashion show in Kolkata turned heads this weekend as over 25 Sindhi homemakers, aged between 40 and 65, confidently walked the ramp. Clad in a mix of traditional Sindhi attire and Indo-Western outfits, the women showcased not just fashion but a powerful message of inclusion and self-worth.

Organised by the Sindhi Social Circle at a central Kolkata club, the event drew an audience of more than 300 people. From draped lehangas to embroidered kurtas, each participant represented personal style and cultural identity. “It’s our time to shine,” said Rita Vaswani, a 58-year-old participant. “We’re not invisible, and this stage proves that.”

Event garners support from designers and activists
Several local designers and social activists attended the event, including Kolkata-based designer Sunita Poddar, who provided styling tips. “It’s refreshing to see a fashion show where the purpose is more than glamour,” said Poddar. “This is about celebrating identity and strength.”

Social workers from women’s welfare groups applauded the initiative for promoting confidence and body positivity among older women, a group often overlooked in public platforms.

Audience reactions and emotional moments
The crowd responded with standing ovations and loud cheers. A few participants became emotional as they spoke about regaining their confidence through the platform. “My children saw me differently today,” said Meena Tulsiani, 49, as she wiped tears after her catwalk. “It’s like a new version of me just woke up.”

Organisers plan to expand this concept into an annual affair, possibly inviting women from other states next year. “We want to build a stage where every woman feels seen,” said the event coordinator, Preeti Chandiramani.

A growing movement in Kolkata’s cultural space
This show reflects a broader shift in Kolkata’s cultural scene, where events celebrating everyday voices — not just celebrities — are gaining traction. Experts say such initiatives foster community ties and reshape societal expectations of women beyond youth and beauty norms.
